The Sprained Ankle

  • Course
  • 7 Lessons

The ankle sprain is often seen as a simple - almost insignificant injury. This course will add detail to your assessment and understanding of this injury and ultimately make you better able to manage patients presenting in your clinic. The course runs for a total of 45 minutes but is divided into sections for easy assimilation of the learning.

A short description of the main learning points

What is Bish/Bash/Bosh and what does it mean in the context of a sprained ankle?

The Big Idea

Healing isn't the same as restoring function.

Almost everyone has sprained an ankle. Most recover sufficiently to walk again. Many never recover normal ankle and foot mechanics.

Course Overview

Healing isn't the same as restoring function.

An inversion ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries, yet it remains one of the most frequently under-treated. Once the pain begins to settle, attention often turns to protection and support, while the underlying mechanics of the ankle and foot receive little consideration.

This course explores why restoring movement is just as important as protecting injured tissues. Using a practical clinical framework, you'll learn how to assess and address the three key mechanical components commonly affected by an inversion sprain: the talocrural joint, the calcaneo-cuboid locking mechanism and subtalar joint mechanics.

Rather than simply helping an ankle recover, you'll develop a systematic approach to restoring efficient foot function, reducing the risk of chronic symptoms and supporting a confident return to activity.

What You'll Learn

By the end of this course you will be able to

Understand why ankle sprains frequently become long-term problems.

Explore why pain often resolves before normal mechanics return, and why this can lead to recurring injuries and long-term dysfunction.

Assess the three key components of an inversion sprain

Learn a structured approach to evaluating the talocrural joint, the calcaneo-cuboid locking mechanism and subtalar joint mechanics.

Restore normal foot mechanics

Develop practical assessment and corrective techniques to improve mobility, stability and efficient foot function following injury.

Apply supportive taping appropriately

Understand when taping can assist recovery and why it should support restored mechanics rather than replace them.

Guide rehabilitation with confidence

Introduce progressive exercises that help patients regain normal movement patterns and return safely to activity.

Why you should consider this course:

Every ankle sprain has the potential to influence the way someone moves long after the pain has settled. Join us and discover how restoring normal foot mechanics can help reduce chronic dysfunction, improve rehabilitation and support a more confident return to activity.
